The homeowners and architect sought to create a dream home that afforded them mountain luxury while also seeking to be sustainably designed. They did so by coupling an extremely well-insulated envelope with passive solar design and a mountain modern architecture aesthetic. Expansive aluminum windows capture surrounding landscape views while maintaining thermal comfort for the home's occupants. Further sustainable aspects of this project include provisions for aging in place, a secondary unit to help address community affordable housing, and multiple panels in the community solar array. They hoped that this project can lead by example, steering many of the large projects in the Yampa Valley in a less wasteful direction.
The home is perched on a hill in Old Town Steamboat Springs overlooking the town and valley while still offering easy walkability to downtown.
